At midnight he set out from there, with the white man, for Fort Pelly. The next day, at five o'clock, he reached Fort Pelly. After leaving there, he camped for the night, and it was his first sleep. He stayed one night. At midnight again he went on; he took four other dogs, good ones. He reached Beaver River at daybreak. At five he again encamped for the night. The next morning, early again he went on; again with new dogs, good ones, again. That evening, before sunset, he again reached Fort Qu'Appelle. Then I saw my father coming on the run, as though in a cloud of smoke, in such a sweat was he, together with that white man, who was being drawn on the sled. When he arrived, very soon he was again sent away. |
