(1)I shall tell about my father long ago, who was a good runner. He had been challenged by a certain man, a Cree, his brother-in-law, to run a whole day, - and a very fast runner was this Cree. So they started off in the morning. When they started, and for a long ways, they were just like this, even, all the time. They had agreed on a certain hill; they were to run round that hill and then back. They ran back, always the same way. Toward evening, when they had got near the goal, he got a little ahead of him, so that the other was a little behind his back. So they arrived. That Cree had whooped a great deal, and so was out of breath.
(2)nôhtâwiy wîstah paskiyâtôwak pêyak pikoh pasastêhikanis. êkosi paskiyâtôwak, pêyak pasastêhikanis. mâka nêhiyawak mistahi paskiyawâwak. pêyak omêmihtâciw misatimwa wîh-nôtinikêw, êkâ ê-wîh-mêkit. âhciko pêyak misatimwa wîh-maskahtwêw ê-mîhkawikiyit. êkwah âpihtawokosisânah ôhi kâ-wîh-maskamât pakamahok pêyakwâw; kîh-cikahkwêwêpahok. êkwa kîh-tapasîw, êh-âpisîsihk.
(2)My father and his rival had staked only a whip. That was what they won and lost, a whip. But the Cree lost much. One, who could not face his loss of a horse, wanted to fight, rather than give it up. He wanted to take it by force, because it was a fast one. Then the halfbreed from whom he wanted to take it, hit him one blow; he knocked him senseless. When he came to, he ran away.
(3)êkwah êkoyikohk êakoni.
(3)So much for these things.
