(1)A certain old man, long ago, went on the war-path in a party of nine men, stealing horses. Then they were going home. They were nine, and those others were of the same number. There was a gully; over here a hill. Then these men saw the others. The others were waiting in ambush for them, as they drove home the horses. Two of the men were walking apart from the others. These two, as they walked by, were attacked by those who were lying in ambush for them. These two men ran off. The men who were driving the horses got ready to fight. They took horses and mounted them; they attacked those who had attacked them. When they saw that the others were attacking them, the aggressors fled. So now the mounted men advanced. One had a metal weapon, a sabre. When he caught up to one, he stabbed him as he overtook him, and went on. Then he attacked another. He overtook this one also; he stabbed this one also. Then he attacked yet another. When he overtook this one, he stabbed him too. Then he attacked yet another. At this point his sabre broke in two. He threw the sabre away. Now he had only a whip. But the handle of that whip was large. He attacked still another man. When he caught up to him, he struck him with that whip. He knocked him senseless. Then he made light-signals; then he went to his comrades. They had fled, and so he went to his companions. When he joined them, they made off, with all the horses which they had taken. So now, returning to whence they had set out, they arrived, in time, where they dwelt. |
