(1)Once upon a time, again, some Assiniboine went visiting, three of them and when they had enough of visiting about, they went home. As they tramped on their way, toward evening, they saw a certain Englishman. Then, since he felt sorry at the way they looked, he took them in for the night. He was very kind to them, they ate well, and he gave them a good place to sleep. But they wanted to sleep near the door. For they were old men. |

(2)«We shall be wanting to go out during the night. Let us sleep over here,» they said to each other. |

(3)So they told him this. He consented. But as for the Englishman, he slept upstairs. And they by the door. They did in fact go outside more than once. And, as he had given them tobacco, -- they had been lacking it, -- they smoked a great deal, while telling each other tales. |

(4)Presently, it must have been near daybreak, they grew thirsty. One had seen where there was some water. He told his companions of it. |

(5)«Over there was some water, right by your head as you lie,» the one who had slipped away told one of the others. |

(6)He groped with his hand round the head of his sleeping-place. He did find something with his hand. He thrust his hand inside the pail: he found nails. |
(7)êkosi, «kiyâm pêtâ,» itik; «osâm mâna nik-êtâpacihtân, kîkwâs wâh-isîhtâyâni.» |
(7)Then, «Hand it over here,» the other told him; «I shall have use for them whenever I want to make one thing or another.» |

(8)Accordingly, he took the pail and gave it to the one who had asked him for it. Then the third one also asked him for it. |

(11)«êkosi niya mîna nika-kimotin,» itêw awa kâ-mâ-mêkit. |
(11)«Then I too may as well filch some,» said he who had been giving them. |

(12)All the while they heard something. By this time it was dawn; while they went on like this, and took these things, dawn had come. Presently something came sounding, three times, no more no less. Then they were much frightened. |
(13)«wîntamâkôwisiw! pakitinâtân ôhi kâ-kimotiyahk! ê-nistiyahk, nistwâw kâ-matwêhikêt. êkosi ê-nistiyahk, nistwâw kâ-matwêhikêt.4 êkosi sipwêhtêtân!» |
(13)«He is being told by spirits! Let us put down these things we have stolen! Because there are three of us, that being has three times struck its sound. As there are three of us, three times that being has struck its sound. Let us get away from here!» |
