(1) kîtahtawê iskwêw otawâsimisa wîcêwêw, ê-nâtahkik mînisa. sîpîhk êkota ê-âpahwâcik misatimwa; êkota ê-wî-kapêsicik. êkosi êkwa sipwêhtêwak, ê-pimohtêcik, mînisa ê-wî-otinahkik. pinasiwêwak sîpîhk. ê-wâpahtahk awa iskwêw mînisa, êkota otinam. kotaka wâpahtam; êkotê itohtêw. kîtahtawê kêkway kâ-wâpahtahk, ostikwâniyiw ê-wâpahtamwât.

(1) Once a woman went with her children to get berries. At the river they unharnessed their horses, planning to camp there. Then they went from there, on foot, to take berries. They went down to the river. Where the woman saw berries, she took them. She saw some more; she went there. Suddenly she saw something; she saw some creature's head.

(2) "misi-kinêpik!" itêyihtam.

(2) “A great serpent!” she thought.

(3) otinêw asiniya ê-pakamahwât, ê-nipahât. êkosi mistik otinam, ê-itohtêt ê-pakamahwât; nipahêw, kâ-wâpamât tâwayihk oskahtikoyihk otêskana ê-kikamoyit, ê-pêyakoyit. êkwa ê-otihciyit kinêpikwa, tâpiskôc sôniyâw ostikwân êsinâkwaniyik.¹

namôya wâpamêw tâni iyikohk ê-iskosiyit ôhi kinêpikwa kâ-nipahât. mitoni ê-sôhkêyimot awa iskwêw, kâ-nipahât ôhi kinêpikwa. êkosi sipwêhtêw, ê-âmaciwêt. êkota kâ-wâpahtahk ê-misâyik wâti.

(3) She took a stone and struck it so as to kill it. Then she took a stick and went up to it and beat it; she killed it; and then she saw that in the middle of its forehead it had a single horn. And the serpent's head looked like bright metal. She could not see how long this serpent was which she had killed. Very brave was this woman, to have slain that serpent. So she went from there, up the bank. There she saw a great cave.

(4) "mâskôc êwako awa kinêpik wîki," itêyihtam.

(4) “No doubt the lair of that serpent,” she thought.

(5) êkosi sipwêhtêw, ê-itohtêt otawâsimisa, ê-âcimostawât ê-nipahât. êkosi ôki oskinîkiskwêwak namôya wî-wâpamêwak, ê-kostâcik.

(5) Then she went from there to where her children were, and told them of how she had killed it. Then those young women did not care to see it, for they were afraid of it.

(6) êkosi êkoyikohk êwako âcimowin.

(6) That is the end of this story.
